I was talking with a friend at the gym a few weeks ago. An energetic super-positive big-hearted guy. We were sharing intentions about what we wanted to focus on in the coming year.
He mentioned his dream is to someday start an orphanage in his native country. He mused, “When I’m 40…” (quite a few years away). He just purchased his first car and next is saving to buy a house. He feels the kind of disposable income it takes to start an effort like this from scratch is not in his grasp right now.
Several years ago, I worked with a client, a very successful entrepreneur, who also had a dream of an orphanage in his home village. “…right after I pay off these loans…” The elusive someday “right after…” dream.
Yet, the reality is–someday may never happen. For so many unforeseen reasons.
Why not make someday today?
Are you setting goals, plans, intentions, or desires for the coming year? This is a good time to take at least one step towards your ‘impossible’ dream!
Begin with one small action to feed that dream.
If your dream is to start an orphanage, maybe…
Get involved in a local immigrant assistance program.
Sign up for newsletters that reflect your interest in that area, to get ‘up to speed’ on what is going on in that space.
Consider a volunteer vacation working with the type of kids you eventually want to support.
Take a class on how to start a non-profit.
Check out the need for volunteers for a local big brother-big sister program.
Who knows what might come to you once you declare your intention and begin to take tiny steps towards it?
When we declare our intention, our brain becomes primed for awareness of things in our environment that might support it. (That is how I wound up working from Lisbon Portugal for a month last year.)
The fulfillment of a dream rarely arrives on your doorstep wrapped all pretty and tied with a big red bow.
Most dreams become reality like a 5000-piece jigsaw puzzle–and you only need 4000 of those pieces to complete the puzzle. Lots of throw always. A piece at a time, fitting into each other to finally anchor a corner.
While looking ahead to what you want to accomplish in the months ahead…
What puzzle piece will you pick up to declare that ‘someday’ begins today?
