I’m a bit of a Dancing With the Stars junkie and this season features its first blind competitor, paralympian Danelle Umstead. She is paired with professional dancer Artem Chigvintse.
The job of Artem and the other pros on the show is to train non-dancers to dance. Their role is to design an experience which stretches their partner’s capability and builds confidence to go further (with your vote!) in the next week. Artem uses his considerable talent to transform his blind partner into someone who can glide across the floor in a graceful foxtrot or lively quickstep. He creates someone to take notice of!
Wouldn’t you want to work for a leader like that?
Are we, as leaders, ready to put our own glory aside and use our considerable talent to stretch other’s capacity and build their confidence?
It’s no fun being on the dance floor alone.
(Danielle and Artem were eliminated in week 2, but not without a prolonged standing ovation. And the leader lesson still stands.)
