“You haven’t changed a bit!” Delighted laughs, heartfelt hugs, glorying in how beautifully we all have aged. A healthy dose of confidence building: My 40th high school reunion.
I did not rush out to get a fresh manicure, a facial, Botox, or highlights. I knew there would be unequivocal love and acceptance, even after all these many years apart. Our school was not about appearances–the plaid uniforms and knee socks made sure of that! It was about Character.
As we toured the school, someone captured the magic many of us felt:
“No matter what I said in class, it was always treated as a relevant insightful comment. It made me feel fearless.”
Traveling back to New Jersey after all these years, I know that my 4 years at Immaculate Heart Academy was one of the significant defining moments in my life. With absolute certainty, I would not have advanced as I did in my 27-year Army career without the internal strength, sense of service, fortitude, and belief in myself—Fearlessness–that was forged at IHA.
As a testament to the strong positive memory of our shared experience, our class raised over $25,000 to support scholarships for other young women seeking the life-altering experience of a women-centric education. I hope some of them find the gift of Fearlessness.
Where did you develop the character strengths that define your life?
